Help Homeless People Settle Down

Haiti continues to face a serious housing crisis due to political instability, natural disasters, and extreme poverty. Thousands of people live in unsafe conditions—on the streets, in tents, or in overcrowded shelters—without access to clean water, basic healthcare, or educational opportunities. This project by PAV-H aims to help homeless individuals and families settle down through emergency aid, transitional housing support, and long-term reintegration programs.

With an initial funding target of $50,000 USD, this program will focus on Port-au-Prince and surrounding vulnerable communities.

2. Problem Statement

Homelessness in Haiti is a multifaceted issue caused by a combination of factors:

  • Natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes) displacing families

  • Gang violence and insecurity driving people from their homes

  • Unemployment and lack of social safety nets

  • Insufficient public housing infrastructure

The consequences include poor health outcomes, child labor, violence, malnutrition, and loss of dignity. Many of the homeless population are children, widows, or people with disabilities.

3. Project Goals

  • Short-term: Provide immediate shelter, food, hygiene kits, and medical assistance to 200 homeless individuals.

  • Mid-term: Offer transitional housing and vocational training to 50 families.

  • Long-term: Support 30 families in securing permanent housing and social reintegration by partnering with local authorities and landlords.

4. Objectives

  • Distribute 200 hygiene and survival kits (mattresses, blankets, water, clothing, food)

  • Set up 3 transitional shelters equipped with basic utilities

  • Provide psychosocial support and counseling

  • Offer life-skills and job-readiness training for adults

  • Enroll homeless children in temporary educational support programs

  • Assist families with documentation and access to public services

5. Target Beneficiaries

  • Homeless families with children

  • Single mothers

  • Disabled or elderly individuals

  • Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from gang-related violence
